Day 1 Fly USA
to Nairobi (Via Europe)
Day 2 Arrive Nairobi
On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Kenya's
capital is cosmopolitan, lively, interesting and pleasantly
landscaped. Its central business district is handily compact and
it's a great place to tune into modern urban African life.
Originally little more than a swampy watering hole for Maasai
tribes, Nairobi grew with the advent of the railway and had became a
substantial town by 1900. Five years later it succeeded Mombasa as
the capital of the British protectorate. Today it's the largest city
between Cairo and Johannesburg.
Accommodation: 1 night – refer to ‘Hotels’ section for detailed
information.
Superior: Sarova Stanley Hotel
Day 3 Nairobi to Shaba Game Reserve
Transfer by road to Shaba Game Reserve. Arrive in time for a late
lunch and enjoy an afternoon game drive.
Situated in Central Kenya off the Uaso Nyiro River, Shaba Game
Reserve is the natural habitat for the Grevy zebra, reticulated
giraffe, and gerenuk, only found in this part of Kenya. There are
also herds of elephant, plenty of lions, cheetah, crocodile, and
hundreds of species of birds and other game.
Accommodation: 2 nights – refer to ‘Hotels’ section for detailed
information.
Standard: Sarova Shaba
Day 4 Shaba Game Reserve
A small gem in the wildlife wilderness, this reserve takes its name
from a cone of volcanic rock. Shaba is one of Kenya's most pristine
game reserves, with untouched scenery and other unspoiled splendors.
Day 5 Shaba Game Reserve to Mt. Kenya
National Park
Drive to Mount Kenya and enjoy lunch followed by afternoon and
evening game viewing.
Mount Kenya plays a crucial role in the life of the country being
Kenya’s single most important permanent watershed and her largest
forest reserve. The fertile soils of its lower slopes also sustain
the growth of the nation’s richest farmlands whilst much of its
vegetation is globally unique.
Accommodation: 1 night – refer to ‘Hotels’ section for detailed
information.
Standard: Serena Mountain Lodge
Day 6 Mt. Kenya National Park to Lake
Nakuru National Park
This morning you will leave Mount Kenya and drive to Lake Nakuru.
Arrive in time for lunch, and then enjoy an afternoon game drive.
Lake Nakuru is famous for the myriad flocks of flamingoes, which
frequently form a stunning pink ribbon along the edges of the lake.
The best place to view the birds is from Baboon Cliff, where you can
look out over the dazzling fringe of pink around the lake's shores.
Despite over 400 species of birdlife having been recorded here, the
park also plays host to herds of buffalo, waterbuck, impala,
Rothschild giraffe, and leopard and a defined area of the park has
now been designated a rhinoceros sanctuary. The park now has more
than 25 rhinos, one of the largest concentrations in the country.
Waterbuck are very common and both the Kenya species are found here.
Among the predators are lion and leopard, the latter being seen much
more frequently in recent times. The park also has large sized
python snakes that inhabit the dense woodlands, and can often be
seen crossing the roads or dangling from trees.
Accommodation: 1 nights – refer to ‘Hotels’ section for detailed
information.
Standard: Sarova Lion Hill Lodge
Day 7 Lake Nakuru National Park to Masai
Mara
Depart on a drive along the floor of the Rift Valley. Maasai can be
seen going about their normal chores in the sheer vicinity of
wildebeest, zebra and gazelle. Arrive in time for lunch, and enjoy
an afternoon game drive in the Masai Mara.
When it comes to game viewing, there is nowhere in Africa richer in
wildlife or more eventful in encounters than the Mara. A pristine
wilderness of haunting beauty, it promises its visitors a profusion
of wildlife, prolific bird life and the unprecedented opportunity of
catching up with all the members of the ‘Big Five’ in one morning.
The scenery is a classic mix of African imagery; miles of lion gold
grasslands, shoals of lilac-misted hills, a meandering river, acres
of thorn-bush and mile upon mile of undulating wilderness.
Accommodation: 2 nights – refer to ‘Hotels’ section for detailed
information.
Standard: Sarova Mara
Day 8 Masai Mara National Reserve
Enjoy a full day in the Mara with two game drives included. The area
offers wonderful scenery and an abundance of big game.
Known as the ‘greatest show on earth’ the annual migration of up to
one and a half million animals between the dry plains of Tanzania
and the lush grasslands of Kenya has featured as an annual event on
Earth’s calendar for the past two million years. And it’s still as
extraordinary, enlightening and exciting an event as ever. Taking
place around the months of August and September the migration is a
spectacle, both comic and tragic, that features the epic journey of
vast herds of wildebeest between the grasslands of Kenya and
Tanzania – flanked by a carnival of other herbivores and stalked by
a ruthless pack of predators. As a vivid portrayal of the violence
of the concept, ‘survival of the fittest’, this is a spectacle, not
always for the faint-hearted, that goes beyond memorable and into
momentous.
Day 9 Masai Mara to USA
